In honor of the 13th, Friday night’s Long Beach Roller Derby bout between the 4th Street Retro Rollers and the Bixby Rollerettes was nicknamed the “Bad Luck Brawl.” The curse that comes with the date though seem to only effect the Retro Rollers as they got thoroughly handled by the defending champs Bixby, 175-91.
It was close early on, as the Retro Rollers and Rollerettes tied at 9 and again at 13, but in a sign of things to come, Bixby got a power play and debutante Evil Dawn Under would put the Rollerettes up by 15. The next jam Buster Chassis would extend Bixby’s lead to 25, and the following jam Pigeon again on a power play would further extend it to 35. Suddenly with a 57-22 lead, the Bixby route was on.
All night 4st Street was in the penalty box and the Rollerettes repeatedly took advantage. Penalties in roller derby use the same terminology as the NHL but they are essentially like fouls in the NBA (they are common, they carry a relatively light penalty, but they can add up and lead to getting kicked out of the game.) A handful of ejections are common but Friday night’s game was extreme. By the end of the bout ten players had been ejected. Asked afterwards if it had been dirtier than usual, Bixby coach Biodiesel said “Long Beach is always feisty…and I love to coach that ‘go get her’ mentality.”
Biodiesel now knows Long Beach Roller Derby. Her sister (Diesel, coach of the Terminal Island Tootsies) and Estro Jen (coach of the 4th Street Retro Rollers) founded the league, and Biodiesel joined soon after but in a coach-only role. But this past offseason a change in league rules now allows her to play and coach, which allows her to help Bixby try to repeat as champions. And Friday night was a good start to the title-defense. But the Bixby Rollerettes will have to stay focused because their next bout isn’t for another 10 weeks.
The next Long Beach Roller Derby match will be the Terminal Island Tootsies versus the Belmont Hot Broads in their league debut on June 3rd.
